Southwest Michigan apple maturity report – September 23, 2015
Sunshine and cooler evenings are promoting good apple ripening. Golden Delicious harvest for processing is underway with Red Delicious harvest next on the horizon.
General comments for this week
We will have no more reports this season for Gala, McIntosh and early Fuji as most have been picked in the Berrien County area due to the advanced maturity. Honeycrisp are nearly done except for blocks in cooler sites, heavier crops or heavier soil.
The current sunny days and cooler nights have been very good for developing good color and maturity and for getting picking done. Stop drop treatments with Retain and NAA are generally working well this year because trees are generally not under stress. Some apple drop has occurred due to pushoffs because of crowded apple growth. Stop drop will not prevent this.
Most of the Jonagold, Jonathan and Empires have been harvested in Berrien County. A few Earlichief Red Delicious have been picked, but most Red Delicious harvesting is waiting for Golden Delicious picking for processing to be done.
Detailed tests for this week – see suggested firmness and starch levels for harvest in Table 1
This is the third week of Empire testing. The predicted long-term storage harvest date for 2015 in central Berrien County is Sept. 18. The average firmness this week was 17.1, still above 16 pounds, the minimum firmness for long-term CA storage. Starch indices this week averaged 3.6, sufficient for all fresh and processing uses.

*Firmness is measured with a mechanical 11-millimeter wide probe inserted into the pared flesh of a fruit to a distance of 8 millimeters. Starch index is measured on equatorial cross section of an apple stained with iodine solution and rated using the Cornell University starch-iodine index chart for apples on a 1-8 scale (Predicting Harvest Date Window for Apples by Blanpied and Silsbey, Cornell Extension Bulletin 221.)

The samples for these reports are collected primarily in Berrien and Van Buren counties – the maturity is only a broad indication of trends for this area. Sites north of here, closer to Lake Michigan, on heavier soils or with heavier crop loads, or with Retain or Harvista treatments will generally harvest later.
Contact Bill Shane at the Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center (SWMREC), 269-944-1477 ext. 205 or 269-208-1652, if you would like to have samples from your farm tested for maturity. Statewide reports will generally be available on the Michigan State University Extension Apple Maturity page by Wednesday afternoon each week.
