This resource is an overview of what jobs exist, what skills and education are required, and what wages are in six subsectors of Michigan's food system:

  • Food production
  • Food inputs and services
  • Food manufacturing and processing
  • Wholesale food distribution or storage
  • Retail food distribution
  • Food preparation and service

This report includes employment statistics from 2019 and 2020, projected five-year growth, level of demand for each job type, and what educational programs are available for career advancement.

This publication is a continuation of work begun with the 2019 Michigan Local and Regional Food System Workforce Assessment, which provided a framework to create career pathway maps that that provide jobseekers and workers with necessary information about career options and the potential for advancement within and across different subsectors of the Michigan food system.

Both the pathways report and workforce assessment produced in partnership between MSU Center for Regional Food Systems and Corporation for a Skilled Workforce (CSW).
