Autonomous Futures

Autonomous systems are disruptive technologies that shape the built environment and affect people and places. These technologies include transportation, the development of smart buildings, structures and roads, and the automation of the workplace. The School of Planning, Design and Construction has interdisciplinary expertise around the development and implementation of autonomous systems, with current interests including:

  • Public attitudes to autonomous systems.
  • Urban and transport planning for autonomous vehicles.
  • Use of autonomous vehicles for public transit.
  • Autonomous transportation for those with disabilities.
  • The use of autonomous vehicles in predictive policing.
  • Smart cities and infrastructure that facilitates autonomous systems.
  • Community engagement around technological change.

The Autonomous Futures research group at SPDC draws from many fields, including urban and transportation planning, urban design, engineering and geography.
