2022 Veterinary Science Camp: Horses!

Hey is for our Horses!

Veterinary Science Camp

It is the second day of Veterinary Science Camp, and the campers are on a roll! Let's see what they've been up to for the past two days:

For our very first day, introductions were definitely in order for our young Vet Science campers, to each other and also introducing the campers to all the different things that they will be learning about throughout the entire week! Lots of icebreakers and fun times were had by all, and this second day, we focused on horses!

First thing's first, each camper got to learn about and participate in the grooming of the horses, some going to clean up the grounds from excrement, others brushing and feeding the horses, before moving on. Of course, collecting excrement is not the most exciting of tasks, so it really brought to their attention of just how important it is to do such jobs.

In addition to horse care, our campers got a special visit from some amazing veterinarians who talked about all the different parts of what makes a horse a horse, from the teeth, right down to the very last hoof. The veterinarians also brought some portable x-ray machines that are often used, since it is quite a bit of work to move a large animal over to a veterinarian center, this way they can quickly assess the situation, and what they need to work on to make the horse feel better.

Of course it would not be a camp week without some very fun games to play! Lots of running was done with the game 'Red Light, Green Light', as well as some games that were also icebreakers that made the groups work together to solve the game. Another amazing activity that was done with the horses was learning about their internal anatomical structures, including how food travels through, as well as painting the skeletal structure on the horse itself.

Apples?IMG_5104

In addition to learning how to treat and care for horses, and learning about animal structures, our Vet Science campers learned to identify differences between...apples? You might be thinking, 'why apples? how does that relate to horses?' The apples although the same kind, has minute differences that distinguish the apples from one another, such as the stem, the grooves, the apples' width, and so on. By training to spot these differences, campers can translate that skill over into identifying the differences between similar horses, that can help identify other traits.

After learning all of that, we focused on learning about the legs of the horse, how the different bones move to allow the horse to bend their legs. A great section that was talked about was leg and hoof care for horses, since they spend all of their time on their legs, we need to make sure that the hoofs are alright, just like we as humans take care of our legs with different kinds of treatments.
