Garlic harvesting

Campers headed out to our CSA field to meet farmer Jared. He taught them how to harvest the garlic we grew here at Tollgate. After, they brought it home for their parents to use!

Garden time

Our amazing volunteers came to give campers a tour of the spices they’re growing. They also got to make a bright colorful banner of what they saw in the garden that will be hung up for everyone to see!

We love our goats!

Today, our goats got milked today! Red Peppers got to milk Sage, she was very sassy about her sweet feed and wanted more when she finished.

STEAM: five freedoms

Everyone started on their projects for the five freedoms today. They got super creative with their drawings and started making them come to life!

Bandaging our buddies

Safety and first aid are important. Campers learned how to care for our stuffed animals and to demonstrate how to properly bandage our animals if they’re injured on the farm. The University Calgary Veterinary Medicine made a video about how to properly bandage an animal. Campers can practice on each other and after they will practice on a stuffed animal.  They also played a matching game about different parts of a chicken such as a hen and a cockerel, a bird comb identification of a chicken!

Fishing

Our pepper groups put their skills to the test today! With the help of our stewards and SIT’s, campers were able to fish. Some were successful and caught quite a bit of fish.

Garden Kitchen: Latkes and Quick Pickles

IMG_7526.jpg

For GK today, they learned how to make latkes (Jewish pancakes). These are always a hit!  Yesterday our GK leader, Kali made quick pickles for campers to try today. It included cucumbers, carrots, and the red peppers wanted a bunch of garlic in theirs! A lot of them tried pickles with crackers topped with goat cheese.
