Green Science Adventure Camp: Day 2
Education Garden: Bugs & Weeds
We had a pretty good start to the day, helping our MSU Tollgate Volunteers pull weeds from our carrot and tomato rows, and then taking off the California Potato Beetles from the leaves of the plants, so they don't hinder the growth of the potatoes. the campers also learnt the importance of L.A.W.N. (Land, Air, Water, Nutrition) and a bonus, T (Temperature) and how all of these five things together contribute to the health and growth of every plant at MSU Tollgate Farm.
Garden Kitchen
Ginger Green Beans & Leafy Green Salad were our two recipes the campers learnt how to make today, just like yesterday the campers were so amazing in the morning, we just had to have a second recipe in the afternoon! Campers got to drum and chop the green beans, broccoli, mix the salad and so on to create these two green meals for our Green Science week. There will be a blog by the end of the week filled with all the recipes that the camp made, so stay tuned!
Pony Snack
How do you feed a pony? Together, of course! The campers got to fix a sweet snack for our two horses, Friday and Sesame. They all got to chop up the celery, carrots, and apples, shovel in the oats, drizzled with molasses to make it sweet. After everybody took turns mixing, we went up to the gates of the horse pen, and Sesame our pony was very happy to come have a taste more than once!
Fishing
Yesterday our campers learnt how to cast a fishing line properly, while on the grass. Today we took to the water to put those amazing skills to use! Quite a few campers were able to catch some really good-sized fish from our tiny pond. This station requires a lot of patience, as many of our campers did find out, having to wait for long periods of time before a fish would bite the hook. They did so well!
STEM: Making Sustainable Farms
Yesterday the campers made a drawn plan on paper, of their ideas of what a sustainable farm (pictured left) could be. Today they were able to physically make them! The campers observed and utilized their natural surroundings to create a miniature sustainable farm, by taking sticks, leaves, flowers, dirt, and more to create the different components. After creating the sustainable farms, the campers got back into their teams and presented their farms to one another.
Animal Chores: Ducks & Bunnies
Learning about the chickens and goats was pretty fun yesterday for our . Today the campers learnt about the ducks and bunnies that we keep on the farm. E were able to see firsthand two of the three bunnies that we have; a big fluffy lop bunny named Eleanor, and another bunny named Stella (pictured right). Some campers were a little afraid because the bunnies do hop fast, however they were very brave and sat in the circle with us! We are so proud of you campers!
