Website Standards Compliance

Our websites conform to modern design and implementation practices in order to be as available to the widest audience possible in the most consistent and accessible manner possible. Below are some of the things we consider when building a website:

Web Standards

Our websites are validated against the W3C standards XHTML 1.0 Strict, XHTML 1.1, HTML5 and CSS 3. This helps to ensure a consistent rendering of the site across many different devices, operating systems, and web browsers. We also utilize the W3C link checker to protect against broken links, and test our websites using recent versions of Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome.

In order to ensure that our websites are available to the widest possible audience, we adhere to MSU's Web Accessibility policy. This helps our sites to be accessible via screen readers and other accessibility devices, as well as improving overall usability and search engine optimization. The MSU Accessibility Policy currently requires WCAG 2.0 AA compliance.

Our websites follow the MSU Brand and Graphic Identity Standards set by University Relations in order to maintain a consistent MSU brand. We attempt to consistently make font and design choices that reflect the brand's core identity, "hardworking excellence".

Intellectual Property

Our websites store information locally, and not in servers owned by vendors or external organizations. This helps us to comply with the MSU Cloud Computing Policy, which deals with secure storage of MSU's intellectual properly.

MSU forbids "the use of individual unit logos on other types of communications intended for external audiences (off-campus), including print and electronic publications and Web sites." This is per a letter from the president dated April 12, 2010.

Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard

We comply with the PCI DSS standard for handling any credit card transactions. MSU is moving to PCI DSS v3.0 beginning 1/1/2015, and all MSU credit card transactions must use MSU's CASHNet payment processor.

Sensitive Data

In order to comply with MSU's Institutional Data Policy, we will not store any data of a sensitive nature on our content management system. If your web application or hosted website handles data that falls under this policy, please discuss this with us prior to launching your site so we can host it on a server intended for this purpose.

Student Education Records

We make every effort to comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) when posting student information on our websites. Students may receive notifications when a student directory is created, and will be provided with an opportunity to opt out.

In order to provide the most usable websites possible, we check each site against an internal list of usability guidelines and other best practices.  By using smaller and lighter file sizes, familiar conventions, fully persistent navigation and other such optimizations, we ensure that the sites we create are easy and intuitive for our end users.
