Future Squad was inspired by Generator Z youth seeking life skill development for a better future for themselves and their peers. This program is designed to help youth (age 12-19) feel prepared and ready to take on the future and adulthood.
We will offer 30 virtual life skills sessions October 2021- June 2022. These topics will cover areas such as money management, career readiness, stress management, goal setting, time management, communication, politics, food safety, and basic household tasks.
We know connection and relationship building is important so, while this program is available virtually, there will be one skill building day in each of the 7 SE counties (Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Monroe, Livingston, and St. Clair) offered in-person as pandemic protocols allow with the themes of:
- Mad City Money (Game of Life Simulation),
- Mock Interview Day,
- Mindfulness Day,
- Nutrition/Chef Day,
- Entrepreneurship Day,
- Emergency Preparedness,
- Communication/Teen Spokesperson.
Youth can attend as many of these dates as they wish. To expand that local connection, each county will also hold a community service day where local youth can gather to positively impact a cause in their local community and get to know other program participants and staff.
Youth who attend 6 sessions, will receive a club t-shirt. Youth who attend 10 or more sessions will be offered a scholarship to the culminating experience at MSU Extension’s premier pre-college program, 4-H Exploration Days. The Exploration Days wrap-up event in June 2022 will allow youth to gather and celebrate their program success while attending fun workshops and educational sessions. Living on the campus of MSU for three days is part of the overall event. To help youth get to and from the event in East Lansing, bus transportation will be available.
