Join the MSU Christmas Tree Team for a field day event on weed management, pruning and shearing, and research updates.  Weed management is critical for successful tree production.  Learn how to identify weed species best control options.  Demonstration of various herbicide products will be shown.  Pruning and shearing decisions also greatly impact the value of the trees at harvest.  Learn both the reasons why and techniques of pruning and shearing trees.       

Agenda:

10:00-10:45: Problem weeds?  Weed Identification and control methods, Dr. Debalina Saha, MSU

10:45-11:15: Why do we shear?  Background of what, why, when, and how to shear Christmas Trees.  Bill Lindberg MSU Extension

11:15-12:00: Weed management Program: Putting it together.  Emphasis of herbicide products, adjuvants and weed resistance , Dr. Debalina Saha, MSU

12:00-12:30:  Lunch (provided at no cost)

12:30:12:45:  Travel to MSU Tree Research Station (5640 E. Jolly Road, Lansing MI 48910)

12:45 to 1:15 Research updates: Delayed coning, tree species selection, and exotic firs trial block.  Dr. Bert Cregg

1:15 to 1:30: Travel to Tannenbaum Farms (2515 Sandhill Rd, Mason, MI 48854)

1:30 to 2:00: Tour Tannenbaum Farms with Jason Buher and Melvin Koelling.  

2:00 to 2:30:  Weed control demonstration plots:  Dr. Debalina Saha

2:30 to 3:00:  Pruning and shearing:  Demonstration and comments.
