Team Hope Senior Design Team receives Schoenl Family Undergraduate Grant for Dire Needs Overseas Honors College - April 12, 2017
The purpose of the Schoenl Family Undergraduate Grant for Dire Needs Overseas is to identify and fund the most outstanding projects which will serve dire human needs in countries other than the U.S. The grant must be used within a 12-month period to make an impact that will help alleviate dire human needs. The team received a $1,200 award towards implementing their senior design project in Belize. The team will be traveling to Belize in May to install a potable water filter system. Hopewell is a small children's home and farm in rural Belize operated by Harvest Expeditions, a US-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Due to a contaminated well, the facility had to purchase city water at a significant cost to their operating account. Hopewell relies heavily on donations to operate, so the added water cost has added pressure to the facility's financial stability. The team designed a water treatment system featuring hollow fiber filtration to provide Hopewell with clean potable water from the original on-site well. This design provides the client with a safe, cost effective, low maintenance and sustainable solution.
