Deadline nears for new summer off-campus MSU commercial vegetable production class

EmailMSU’s Institute of Agricultural Technology will conduct a class on commercial vegetable production at northwest and southwest Michigan community colleges this summer. Deadline to enroll is May 1.
The Michigan State University Institute of Agricultural Technology (MSU IAT) has been conducting practical plant, animal and technology certificate courses on its East Lansing, Mich., campus for more than 100 years. A new course, AT 291 Vegetable Production, will be offered at Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor, Mich., and Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Mich.
MSU IAT off-campus coordinators guide prospective students through the application process, development of courses of study and student internship. In addition to local access to MSU academic programs serving agriculture, the community college collaboration enables students to obtain an associate’s degree through supplemental coursework.
AT 291Vegetable Production will address crop cultural needs; soil management and fertility for vegetables including crop rotation and cover crops; weed management; insects and diseases of vegetable crops; mulching practices; marketing systems and safe handling of produce. This three-credit class meets 6-9 p.m. on Tuesdays, May 14 through August 13, and includes field trips and lab sessions outside of class time. The enrollment deadline is May 1.
All MSU IAT courses are taught by MSU-approved faculty, including Michigan State University Extension educators. Credits earned are fully transferable to on-campus bachelor’s degree programs.
Students who do not wish to obtain university credits for the AT 291 have the option of enrolling with MSU’s Lifelong Education. Visit the Lifelong Education webpage for details.
