FCCP publishes policy brief with MSU Canadian Studies Center
FCCP publishes Canada Connect policy brief with the MSU Canadian Studies Center.
EAST LANSING, MI – FCCP director Dr. Chad Papa authored a Canada Connect Policy brief titled “Addressing the Impacts of Catastrophic Wildfires through Proactive Forest Management and Wood Utilization” with the MSU Canadian Studies Center.
The policy brief outlines the adverse effects of wildfires across North America on Michiganders and how both a
changing climate and legacies of past management have led to current challenges. Additionally, the brief summarizes how adopting a broad mindset to forest management and policy to address catastrophic wildfires through landscape-scale adaptive management is needed to protect the future of our forests and human health in Michigan and beyond. The brief also discusses how investing in emerging forest products and bioenergy could provide a necessary source of finance for forest management and additional climate-mitigation benefits.
Building on momentum from the policy brief, FCCP affiliate faculty member Emily Silver, Associate Professor and Associate Chairperson, MSU Department of Forestry, represented MSU FCCP and presented at a public forum at the Anderson House Office Building in Lansing, MI on foreign ownership of Michigan forestland as well as forest fire management and mitigation in Michigan.
The Canada Connect Initiative leverages and showcases the wide-ranging expertise of MSU faculty on issues relevant to the Michigan-Canada and U.S.-Canada relationship; the Canada Connect Policy Initiative keeps Michigan legislators and key stakeholders informed on Canada-related issues key to Michigan’s economy, industries, and communities. As part of the initiative, MSU faculty present legislators with policy briefs on issues concerning the Michigan-Canada relationship and address related inquiries during a subsequent public forum.
