Commission awards Good opportunity to study fisheries management

Molly Good, a CSIS doctoral student, will be paired with a Great Lakes Fishery Commission executive to learn about fisheries management in the Great Lakes Basin with the help the Janice Lee Fenske Excellence in Fisheries Management Fellowship.
She was awarded the one-year fellowship, which along with Michigan State University provides $5,000 and a sharp focus on mentoring. Good will work with fisheries commission executive secretary Bob Lambe. The commission brings together people from various U.S. states, Canadian provinces and tribes to achieve sustainable fisheries outcomes in a highly complex social and ecological environment.
The fellowship, administered by the MSU Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, was named for Jan Fenske, the first female biologist for the Fisheries Division of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and an MSU graduate. During her 27 years of service, Fenske’s love of the environment compelled her to work for the long-term protection and sustainable use of the state’s aquatic resources.
Good will work on a project focused on Great Lakes invasive species management initiatives. She plans to incorporate new information about effective management and enforcement strategies aimed at diminishing unintentional and unlawful species introductions and sustaining native Great Lakes fish species and habitat.
