Get dancing!

Line dancing is a great physical activity.

According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, all adults should avoid inactivity. Some physical activity is better than none, and adults who participate in any amount of physical activity gain some health benefits.

Group activities are a great way to socialize and get exercise. Line dancing can be enjoyed by any age and can be done anywhere from the backyard, to the church community room. If you don’t know how to line dance, that’s OK – videos that demonstrate line dancing can be found almost anywhere online to serve as a resource. Dancing is another form of physical activity, which is critical for health at any age. When line dancing, as with all physical activities, it is important to remember to drink plenty of water and to stay hydrated.

For substantial health benefits, adults should do at least 150 minutes (two hours and 30 minutes) a week of moderate-intense physical activity, or 75 minutes (one hour and 15 minutes) a week of vigorous-intense aerobic physical activity, or an equivalent combination of moderate and vigorous intense aerobic activity. Aerobic activity should be performed in episodes of at least 10 minutes, and preferably, it should be spread throughout the week. Senior adults should be very careful and stay within their limitations.

Michigan State University Extension reminds that before doing any physical activity you should consult a doctor. A copy of the Physical Activity Guidelines can be downloaded for free. This PDF has a lot of information on safe physical activity for all ages and the amounts of physical activity suggested for youth and adults.

I hope you chose to dance!
