Grow It, Cook It, Eat It workshops offer gardening, nutrition and recipe preparation lessons

Would you like to learn more about selecting and using fresh produce in your cooking? Do you know other greens besides lettuce pack a bigger punch of antioxidants and health benefits? According to eXtension, different vegetables provide varying health benefits. So take advantage of the produce now available at local farmer’s markets, through community supported agriculture (CSA) or in your own garden. The Upper Peninsula Grow It, Cook It, Eat It series will provide participants the opportunity to learn more about the different types of greens, root vegetables, pumpkins and squash. Taste test fresh and prepared vegetables and participate in cooking demonstrations.
The Upper Peninsula Grow It, Cook It, Eat It series is a three-class series offered Mondays, July 27, Aug. 24 and Sept. 14 from 6-8 p.m. CST at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 808 Carpenter Ave., Iron Mountain, MI 49801. It is open to anyone interested in learning more about the different types of vegetables that are offered at local farmer’s markets, through CSAs or grown in your own garden. Join Michigan State University Extension nutrition educator Beth Waitrovich and myself as we pair up to bring you advice on gardening, plant selection, nutrition and recipe preparation.
Learn how to properly identify, select and harvest greens, root vegetables, pumpkins and squash that will suit your needs and tempt your taste buds. Fresh produce will be available for sampling and participants will assist in cooking demonstrations and enjoy recipes prepared with the greens, roots, pumpkins and squash.
Online registration is now open. You can sign up for all three sessions or pick and choose. Save $10 on the series or individual classes by registering by July 24.
