Lake Erie toxic algal bloom topic of December 5 session at Michigan State University

Although not the most appetizing topic, McNALMS’ annual Lunch and Learn Seminar will host national expert on the “perfect storm” that shut down Toledo’s water supply.

The Michigan Chapter, North American Lake Management Society will present its annual Lunch and Learn Seminar on Friday, December 5, 2014, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Room 136 of Brody Hall, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan.

The featured speaker will be Dr. Jeff Reutter, Director of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program at the Ohio State University and also Director of the F.T. Stone Laboratory Center for Lake Erie Area Research. He will be presenting a talk on Nutrient Loading and Harmful Algal Blooms in Lake Erie and Inland Lakes: Concerns for Water Supplies. Registration is now open at www.mcnalms.org. Cost of $20 ($15 for students) includes the presentation, buffet luncheon and dessert. Registration closes December 2.

You probably recall this Michigan State University Extension article about last summer’s algal bloom that shut down the city of Toledo’s (and parts of southeast Michigan’s) drinking water supply. Experts have described this situation as “the perfect storm” where water temperatures, nutrient concentrations and wind patterns all came together at a critical location – the Toledo water intake pipe. Reutter’s talk will shed light on exactly what happened and how cities around the Great Lakes are responding.
