FCCP team members, Lauren Cooper and Daphna Gadoth, attended the 2023 Michigan Chapter of the Soil & Water Conservation Society Conference (MI SWCS) as part of ANR Week in St. Johns, Michigan.

Michigan State College of Agriculture and Natural Resources hosts ANR Week every year, providing a platform for sharing innovative developments in agriculture and natural resources within Michigan. The seminar encourages attendees to network, discover advancements, and explore potential solutions. This year's seminar was titled “Sustainable Intensification of the Rural Landscape: Protecting Soil Health, Water Quality, and Farm Profitability”.

Cooper and Gadoth gave a presentation titled “Forests and Forest Products as a Natural Climate Solution for Michigan”. The presentation abstract is as follows:

“Michigan’s natural working lands (NWL) and forests are critical components for achieving the state’s goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by mid-century. The wise management of working lands and forests can not only reduce emissions but also remove carbon from the atmosphere. However, land use and management decisions are complex and may result in trade-offs and co-benefits. The Natural and Working Lands and Forest Product Workgroup developed guiding principles to assist with the collective development of recommendations for the Michigan Council on Climate Solutions. This talk will cover the role of forests and wood products in terms of science, policy, and action.”
