Meet our new floriculture outreach specialist

The MSU Department of Horticulture recently hired Dr. Kristin Getter to serve as a resource for commercial floriculture growers in east Michigan.

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Kristin Getter has been hired as a floriculture outreach specialist based in the MSU Department of Horticulture, effective November 1, 2011. Kristin will develop an outreach program in floriculture to support the commercial greenhouse industry in east Michigan, as well as collaborate with MSU faculty to perform applied research on floriculture production and marketing issues and problems. She joins Thomas Dudek (western Michigan) and Jeanne Himmelein (southwest Michigan) as educators to serve Michigan’s $400 million floriculture industry. Kristin Getter

Kristin earned her master’s and doctorate in horticulture at MSU, focusing on urban sustainability and extensive green roofs. She also has research experience working with the Department of Horticulture’s Bridget Behe on topics such as consumer shopping habits and preferences. She’s taught several horticulture classes and brings with her a wide range of computer expertise.

Kristin’s main office will be room A228 of the Plant and Soil Sciences building (phone: 517-355-5191 ext. 1341; email: getterk@msu.edu), and she will also have an office at Tollgate Education Center in Novi, Mich. Her skills and experiences will certainly build the floriculture outreach and production research efforts at MSU.

Thanks to the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Michigan Floriculture Growers Council for their support of this position.

Dr. Runkle’s work is funded in part by MSU’s AgBioResearch.
