MSU Extension spring 2013 hops update

IPM collaborations, MSU Extension hops website updates and hops workshops announced.

Multi-state and International Integrated Pest Management (IPM) collaborative

Beginning in May 2013, Michigan State University Extension educators will be working in coordination with researchers at the University of Minnesota, University of Vermont and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs. Erin Lizotte, Michigan State University Extension IPM educator will be monitoring hops pests and predators on a weekly basis in northwest Michigan and sharing information and control measures with these colleagues. We hope to publish information on the MSU hops website.

MSU Extension hops website updated

In addition to IPM information the MSU Extension hops website will add a calendar of events to help those interested in hops production locate educational opportunities around Michigan. This addition compliments a one stop shop site where prospective hop growers can learn almost anything pertaining to hop production. From purchasing plants and coir string, to building a trellis, we strive to make our website a repository of useful information. As always please feel free to offer suggestions on how we can improve the usefulness of the site.

Two hops workshops announced for summer 2013: Save the dates!

MSU Extension will offer two hops educational programs this summer. The first will occur in southwest Michigan at SWMREC on Wednesday, August 7, 2013, and on Friday, August 9, 2013, we will host our fifth annual Northwest Michigan Hops Tour. Please save the dates for these events and check the website for registration information, which should open in mid-May. Plans are also underway to host a grower/brewer harvest symposium in conjunction with the Michigan Brewers Guild in September. We will keep you posted as more information becomes available.
