MSU Extension teams up with Power of Produce at the Muskegon Farmers Market for the second year

Family friendly nutrition activities will be provided during most Saturday markets this summer

Need a new idea for how to prepare Michigan asparagus for your family? Do you have some picky eaters that won’t touch green vegetables? How about some little ones that need to burn off some energy while shopping at the farmers market? Michigan State University Extension and the Power of Produce Club at the Muskegon Farmers Market have some solutions for all of these issues and more!

Mark your calendars now so you won’t miss any of these fun activities that run from 10 a.m. until noon at the Muskegon Farmers Market located at 242 Western Ave., Muskegon, MI 49440.

June 4 – Chopping Veggies Activity: Michigan Asparagus Salsa

Kids will get to try out a special hand-chopping tool made just for little hands. They will chop some vegetables used to make asparagus salsa. Parents will walk away with a recipe card and kids excited about buying asparagus!

June 18 – Cream-Filled Michigan Strawberries

Try out your pastry skills with this fun and tasty activity. Kids will get to eat their creation. A Michigan Fresh strawberry factsheet will be provided to participants.

June 25 – Farmers Market BINGO

Come explore the market with your children through this interactive scavenger hunt through the market. Learn all kinds of interesting facts about Michigan agriculture. Complete the entire list and win a prize.

July 2 – Independence Day Skewers

Celebrate our nation with Michigan blueberries, strawberries and marshmallow skewers. Kids get to create their own tasty dessert.

July 9 – Blueberry Muffins in Kitchen 242

Michigan is the nation’s top producer of blueberries and we are celebrating them with a hands-on cooking demonstration in Kitchen 242 at the market. Not only do we get to cook them, we get to eat them too! Recipe cards will be distributed to participants.

July 16 & 23 – Fender Blender Green Smoothies

Have you ever made a smoothie using the power of your own legs? Come try out our Fender Blender – a stationary bike powered blending machine. Burn some calories and enjoy a healthy smoothie on us. Parents that complete a short evaluation form will be given a free Michigan Fresh shopping bag.

July 30 – Wheatberry Grinding

Do you love bread, cookies or pastries? If so, you will love this hands-on demonstration. We are learning everything there is to know about wheat and wheatberry grinding to make different kinds of flour. Participants will get to take home some flour to try out.

August 6 – Michigan Peach Crisp in Kitchen 242

We are back in the kitchen baking up some juicy Michigan peaches. You won’t want to miss this delicious treat. Participants will walk away with a recipe card so you can make this recipe as many times as you like for your friends and family.
