NEW “Carbon Stewardship on National Forests and Grasslands” short course launched freely available

FCCP releases new “Carbon Stewardship on National Forests and Grasslands” short course co-developed in collaboration with the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science, freely available to interested learners.

The Michigan State University Forest Carbon and Climate Program released a three-module short course titled “Carbon Stewardship of National Forests and Grasslands,” which was co-developed by the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIACS), a collaborative, multi-institutional partnership led by the USDA Forest Service and through additional support from the USDA Forest Service.

This short course was developed to help inform land management planning and projects on National Forest Systems lands to further incorporate carbon and climate considerations. The objectives of the short course are to enable participants to communicate confidently about federal land management and implications for the carbon cycle, understand the impacts of multi-use sustainable management actions, increase awareness of key issues related to climate-induced stressors, and build land manager capacity to understand applying principles of carbon stewardship to land management plan development.

The course features three modules:

  1. Policy frameworks and Carbon 101
  2. Forest and Grassland Carbon Dynamics
  3. Climate Change & Carbon Stewardship

All of which outline and explore key terms and concepts related to federal land management, carbon cycle science, and interactions with sustainable management and climate change.

This short course is free of charge and available on our website.
