November is National Diabetes month. In 2011 according to the Michigan Department of Community Health an estimated 758,300 adults had been diagnosed with diabetes and an additional 250,200 Michigan adults are estimated to have diabetes but are currently undiagnosed. Michigan Health and Human Services is highlighting an event at the Capitol building. “The event “Eat Well America” will show participants it is never too late to take charge of your health and begin eating healthy, exercising and developing healthy lifestyle skills, before the disease takes control of you.” Says Nick Lyon, director of the MDHHS.

Lifestyle classes from Michigan State University Extension can help one make healthy choices. MSU Extension offers Dining with Diabetes, a four week program, PATH Diabetes which is a six week program and the National Diabetes Prevention Program, a one year program. The programs listed have had great success at helping people with health challenges develop healthy life skills. Call or go to the website for your local Michigan State University Extension office to review the dates and times of the classes.

The American Diabetes Association website has a wealth of information including wonderful recipes. The website explains the differences in type 1 and type 2 diabetes and gives you resources to take control of your Diabetes. There are many valuable patient education materials, and support materials to help manage your diagnosis.

If you have a Fitbit and want to support the American Diabetes you can go to Fitbit or American Diabetes websites. There is a contest and for every step each one of us takes in a month time. The American Diabetes Foundation will receive dollars for research and awareness. Take the time, walk a lot and help out your community by helping with the November walkathon.
