Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s (MDARD) Temporary Registered Applicator Program to certify new pesticide applicators making applications for hire is a welcome accommodation industry. One very important difference between a registered applicator and a commercial certified applicator is when using Restricted Use Pesticides (RUPs). Registered applicators are prohibited from purchasing, applying, mixing or loading RUPs.

View the list of Michigan RUPS from MDARD, last updated May 14, 2020.

The list has several Pyrethriod insecticides that may be in golf course, mosquito control or landscape operation’s inventories. The registered applicator trainers must make registered applicators aware they cannot apply any of these insecticides when doing the operation specific training of the registered applicator.

MDARD reviewed Regulation 633 RUP active ingredients in 2016. Active ingredient Diuron went on the list as a Michigan-specific RUP. Formulations containing Diuron are not mentioned as RUP on the federal label.

Diuron is in herbicide formulations labeled ground vegetation control. Diuron may be formulated alone or with other active ingredients. Typical uses are fence lines, utility infrastructure, pavement underlay, pavement damaging vegetation, etc. These formulations are often referred to as soil sterilants.

A review of pesticides registered for sale and use in Michigan 2020 has 17 companies and 40 products containing Diuron. A partial list of products with that may be in landscape or right-of way management operation’s inventories (see table below). The purpose is awareness of RUP when training registered applicators.
