Travel Grants to PanAfrican Conference

Ten crop science graduate students will have the opportunity to receive a travel grant for up to $3500 from the Crop Science Society of American and USAID.

This CSSA-USAID travel grant is intended to allow ten graduate students to attend the joint PanAfrican Grain Legume and World Cowpea Research Conference, the premier scientific event during the 2016 International Year of Pulses. Funds provided by USAID and administered by CSSA seek to identify suitable candidates that have a passion to improve pulse crop productivity and share their research efforts with the world pulse community. 

This program will provide travel grants up to $3500 each to ten crop science graduate students presenting papers (oral or poster) at the Pan African Grain Legume Research Conference 28 February to 4 March 2016 in Livingston, Zambia.  Preference will be given to students that are involved with ongoing pulse crop research in productivity or associated fields. Preference will be given to students from any of the following (not in order of importance): (a) US citizens and permanent residents, (b) Feed the Future focus countries (http://www.feedthefuture.gov/countries), (c) Other developing countries.

 The following criteria will be consider for selection of grantees:

  • Relevant research and experience in pulse crop research
  • Quality of abstract submission
  • Financial need
  • Personal statement relevance to pulse research
  • Professional accomplishments
  • Potential as future pulse scientist.

Each recipient will initially pay for his or her own travel expenses and registration, and will be reimbursed after attending the conference. To be eligible, grantees must reserve air travel according to the "Fly America Act" (http://www.gsa.gov/portal/content/103191). In addition, recipients both individually and collectively will be expected to provide updates of their experiences via social media to the CSSA Facebook and Twitter accounts, and write a collective article for CSA News on their experiences.
