Carly is a Ph.D. student and NSF Graduate Research Fellow splitting time between this lab and Dr. Marks’s food safety engineering lab. She completed her B.S. and M.S. in Biosystems Engineering, also at Michigan State. During her time at MSU, Carly held several research positions and completed internships at Kellogg, Illumina, the Partnership for Food Safety Education, and Henry Ford Health. She was also involved with the BAE student group, serving as Chair for one year, and MSU’s Council of Graduate Students, serving as Vice President of Internal affairs for one year. Outside of scholarly work, Carly enjoys cooking, home improvement DIYs, and following Detroit sports.

Research
Carly’s research interests lie at the nexus of risk assessment and decision modelling, public health, microbial food safety, and risk communication. Specifically, she has built risk and decision models for food safety diets in cancer patients, and for economic valuation of risk reduction for industry food safety investments. The goals of these works are to improve food safety guidelines and communication strategies for immunocompromised populations, and to quantify benefits of food safety technology investment, respectively.
