Abstract:
While genomic data continues to be generated at unprecedented scale, the analysis of these data lags far behind. Given past history in GenBank, the human genome project, the human microbiome project, and many bioinformatics tools and databases, LANL has a rich history in this field. My lab has been interested in both generating analytics for large genomic or transcriptomic datasets, and making these available for use by the general public. We have used these tools in our own projects, to analyze individual microbial genomes, to decipher more complex microbiome datasets, to help detect pathogens in environmental and clinical sequencing data, etc.,and we have built a suite of tools that target gaps in bioinformatics when investigating the interactions among soil bacteria and fungi, or more broadly to look at the fungal 'microbiome'. I will present an overview of our recent past and ongoing work in bioinformatics and data science, as well as some surprising findings in our broader investigations into bacterial-fungal interactions.
