PSM Open House 2026
February 3, 2026 - March 5, 2026
Hello!
With FFA State Convention approaching, we are seeking presenters for this year’s PSM Open House on March 5. This event is a great opportunity to engage with 300+ high school students and share the exciting work happening in our department. Faculty, staff, postdocs, graduate students, and even undergraduate groups are welcome to present. Sessions are repeated up to four times, and in past years we’ve filled seats very quickly which resulted in the addition of a second session!
We welcome any topic, especially those with hands‑on components or tours. Examples from previous years include:
- Plant Diagnostics (Nematology, Herbicide Resistance, Plant/Seed ID)
Explore how plant scientists act as detectives, using pathology, entomology, and weed science expertise to diagnose plant-related issues. - Biofuels
Learn how cellulosic crops and agricultural by‑products play a key role in future transportation energy, including the agronomic and environmental principles behind bioenergy feedstock production. - Plant Pathology
Examine diseased plants, test diagnostic methods, and use magnification tools to investigate plant health and food pathogens. - Strawberry Breeding Hands‑On Lab
Discover how breeders improve disease resistance and maintain quality traits in strawberries. Participants act as breeders to evaluate varieties.
If you're unsure what you might present, I’m happy to brainstorm ideas. Options include research demonstrations, lab tours, or showcasing equipment. We also need volunteers to help guide groups between sessions and assist with check‑in. Room reservations can be arranged if your lab isn’t suitable for hosting.
Each group will include 10–18 students.
Schedule for the day:

- 2:00–2:15 pm: Department presentation – 1200 MPS
- 2:20–2:45 pm: Group 1
