Wildland Fire and Forest Carbon Management

Discover the intersection of fire, carbon, and climate science with the Wildland Fire & Forest Carbon Management online learning module from MSU FCCP. This comprehensive course blends emerging research and real-world case studies to illuminate the connections between these crucial topics. This four-part course is intended for land managers, fire practitioners, policy makers, and enthusiasts interested in fire and carbon management. Learners will gain an understanding of the basic drivers of fire, as well as more in-depth information on carbon pools, fluxes, and management. Additionally, cutting edge climate science is incorporated throughout the course, promising an engaging, educational, and exciting learning experience.

This course includes the following learning topics:

  1. Presentation 1:  Introduction to Wildland Fire, Carbon and Climate Change in the United States
  2. Presentation 2:  Climate, Fire, Carbon & Measurements
  3. Presentation 3:  Management & Policy Considerations
  4. Presentation 4:  Fire & Carbon Case Studies

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the relationship between carbon and fire
  • Recognize key climate change drivers impacting fire behavior
  • Analyze adaptation approaches and tactics to fire and carbon management
  • Interpret case studies surrounding forest management with and emphasis on carbon and climate management

Recommended Prerequisite:

Some knowledge of forestry and/or forest carbon science will be helpful for this learning experience. While it is possible to take this intensive course separately, we recommend it as a supplement to one of the following programs: Understanding Forest Carbon Management or the Graduate Certificate in Forest Carbon Science, Policy, and Management.

Course Collaborators

This course is offered by the Michigan State University Department of Forestry Forest Carbon and Climate Program (FCCP). Course content was co-developed with MSU faculty as well as the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIACS), a collaborative, multi-institutional partnership led by the USDA Forest Service. Course development was made possible through funding from USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

This course is offered three times per year according to the schedule below. Participants can register at any time, but we recommend busy professionals give themselves 2-3 weeks to complete the course. The course must be completed during the access window.
