About the Opportunity

Are you a Turfgrass Management student at Michigan State University looking to take your classroom knowledge to the next level? Spend your summer working alongside one of the most experienced agronomy teams in the industry at Detroit Golf Club, home of the PGA TOUR’s Rocket Classic.

We’re offering an immersive, hands-on internship designed to accelerate your growth and prepare you for your next step in the turf industry. From daily course setup to tournament prep for a PGA event, you’ll gain real-world experience managing championship conditions on two classic Donald Ross courses.

What You’ll Learn

You’ll work closely with the Director of Agronomy and Course Superintendents in all facets of golf course management, including:

  • Daily course setup and operation of all turf equipment
  • Calibration and application of fertilizers and plant protectants
  • Irrigation troubleshooting, repair, and scheduling (Rainbird Cirrus system)
  • Drainage installation and repair
  • Hand watering and moisture management

You’ll also get unique exposure to:

  • A week in the shop with our Equipment Manager learning mower setup and maintenance
  • Scheduling and leading crews for weekly operations
  • Educational field trips and seminars with local GCSAA industry leaders
  • Networking opportunities at industry events and PGA tournament prep

Why Detroit Golf Club

Detroit Golf Club was founded in 1899 and features two historic Donald Ross–designed courses. Our North Course recently completed a full renovation in 2025, including greens, bunkers, tees, irrigation, drainage, and fairway regrassing — giving interns the chance to learn from a newly renovated championship facility.

Interns will play a key role in the 2026 Rocket Classic, gaining behind-the-scenes tournament experience that stands out on any resume. Many past interns have gone on to secure assistant superintendent and full-time positions within the industry — including opportunities right here at DGC.

Who We’re Looking For

  • Currently enrolled in a two- or four-year Turfgrass Management program (MSU students encouraged to apply!)
  • Enthusiastic, hardworking, and eager to learn in a team environment
  • Previous golf or sports turf experience preferred but not required
