4-H club takes root

Their garden, part of Sault Sainte Marie's community garden system, quickly outgrew its space. They are grateful to the Sault Gardening Club for the generous donation of two garden plots for the 4-H club to use this growing season.

The Growing Gardeners 4-H Club was established in June of 2009 in Sault Sainte Marie. It took off quickly, with at least eight members and club leader Kerry Lake meeting bi-weekly at a community garden to plant, water and weed their gardens while also learning about nutrition and healthy living choices.

Their garden, part of Sault Sainte Marie’s community garden system, quickly outgrew its space, and soon the club members were asking for more. They are grateful to the Sault Gardening Club for the generous donation of two garden plots for the 4-H club to use this growing season.

With the onset of summer and warm rains, the garden flourished. The youth, under the guidance of a skilled gardening leader, established both salad and pizza gardens. The 2009 program concluded the summer with a pizza party that was created as much as possible from goodies the 4-H club grew.

In addition to the vegetables, they established a 4-H flower path that clearly illustrates the four “H’s” of 4-H: Head, Heart, Hands and Health.
