Positive impact of 4-H programs in Ingham County
Ingham County 4-H youth share what 4-H has done for them.
Michigan State University Extension’s Michigan's 4-H program continues to transform the lives of young people in Ingham County. More than an extracurricular program, 4-H is a learning, leadership and service platform that strengthens the community and opens doors to the future.
During a recent presentation to the Ingham County Board of County Commissioners in August 2025, 4-H youth themselves testified to the impact the program has had on their lives. With confidence and enthusiasm, they expressed that thanks to their participation in 4-H they have developed:
- Skills to speak in public without fear of expressing oneself.
- Planning and organizing skills through leading events such as auctions at the summer county fair.
- Responsibility and commitment by actively caring for their animals.
- Leadership and the ability to set clear goals that inspire them to continue growing personally and professionally.
These experiences have not only strengthened youth, but were also reflected in the community members present during the meeting who have witnessed firsthand the safety, belonging and heart that characterize 4-H.
The most moving moment came during the public commentary when one of the young women recited the 4-H pledge in a warm and powerful voice. In front of the commissioners, she proudly said:
"I pledge my head to clearer thinking,
my heart to greater loyalty,
my hands to larger service, and
my health to better living,
for my club, my community, my country and my world."
That gesture summed up the spirit of 4-H: mind, heart hands and health in service to the community and the future.
Other youth have shared their thoughts through letters to the Ingham County Commissioners. An excerpt from one such letter penned by Ingham County 4-H member Sophia N. is shared here:
“…4-H is important to me because it has helped me shape a path for my future. I found my passion for agriculture and communications through the many opportunities 4-H has provided, and I plan to go to college to study something in the agriculture field once I graduate. 4-H has given me long-lasting friendships, skills to develop myself professionally, and has allowed me to find my passion”.
The impact of 4-H in Ingham County goes beyond the skills acquired: it creates a sense of belonging, fosters self-confidence, and nurtures community engagement. Today, 4-H youth are living proof that the program continues to beat strong in Ingham County, inspiring new generations to become leaders, responsible citizens and agents of change.
