My nervousness about delivering my first scientific presentation had been ramping up for months prior to our departure for Russia. Not only was this a new experience for me, but I would be speaking to a group of very specialized and experienced charr researchers about the very beginnings of my master’s project. It was my hope that they could help provide some insight for my own research and help steer me down the best scientific path.
My presentation, “The Impact of Climate Change on Brook Charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) Populations in the Midwest and Eastern United States,” was intended to begin to explore the relationship between global climate change, rising late summer stream temperatures and the status of brook charr thermal habitat. Additionally, I explained my ideas for the future direction of my project and some potential management implications for these cold water fish under warming conditions.
To my great relief, I made it through the presentation with as much gusto as I could muster. I believe the fact that the room was dark and I could not actually see my audience helped a bit! My research topic also was met with a great deal of enthusiasm and seems to have been deemed a subject matter worthy of pursuit! Just as I had hoped, I received plenty of comments and suggestions as well. Now, to write the follow up paper…stay tuned!
