The Livestock and Poultry Environmental Learning Center provides on-line information on air quality

The Livestock and Poultry Environmental Learning Center provides science based information on air quality and climate change and livestock production’s impact on those issues.

The Livestock and Poultry Environmental Learning Center (LPE) is an on-line resource providing science based information on environmental issues impacting livestock and poultry production. Its library of educational resources is provided by the member universities of e-Xtension and their partner organizations.

As livestock and poultry producers, consultants, and concerned residents have become interested in air quality, climate change, and agriculture’s impact on those issues, LPE has responded by providing resources addressing those topics.

A recent addition to the LPE air quality section is the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources and Conservation Service’s (NRCS) online course on air quality, climate change and energy. While the course was developed specifically for NRCS employees, conservation planners and technical service providers, it is available for general public viewing through LPE. This course, while intended for NRCS staff, is an excellent resources for producers, extension educators, state and federal government agency staff, local government officials and the general public who would like to know more about agriculture’s impact on energy, climate change and air quality.

The time required to view all the modules contained in the course may seem extensive (viewing length varies from 30 to 90 per module) but the basic information provided by the course will be valuable to those individuals with a serious interest in the covered topics.

In total, there are four tracks to the course. Viewers should complete the “Introductory course” before proceeding to the other tracks. The background information in the introduction will help viewers understand the material contained in the remaining tracks. The other three tracks contain modules on Air Quality, Air Quality Resource Concerns, Greenhouse Gases and Carbon Sequestration, Energy Basics and Why Do We Care About Energy. The five modules contained in these three tracks may be viewed in any order depending on the viewer’s preference and interest.

Other air quality resources at LPE include updates on federal regulations impacting livestock and poultry production, recorded seminars on using the National Air Quality Site Assessment Tool (NAQSAT) and webinars on ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and greenhouse gas emissions from livestock and poultry operations.

To access the air quality information available at LPE go to e-Xtension at: http://www.extension.org/, click on the LPE tab and then select the Air Quality tab on the LPE home page.
