David Turton is a social anthropologist who was formerly Director of the Refugee Studies Centre at the University of Oxford. Before that he taught for twenty years in the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester. His field research has been with the agro-pastoral Mursi of the Lower Omo Valley in southwestern Ethiopia and has focused on the impact of long-term ecological change on migration, settlement and political identity. He has been editor of the Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute and of Disasters and has made six films for television on the Mursi with the documentary director, Leslie Woodhead.
