Biological Safety

Description

Biological safety is an important component when working with living things or materials that come from living things. This includes safe animal handling, biosecurity, and food safety.

Safe animal handling is critical to maintaining the health of both the student and the animal. Safe and effective animal handling requires a thorough understanding of the “normal” behavior and responses of each species. Biosecurity refers to everything that is done to keep diseases, and the pathogens that carry them (e.g., viruses, bacteria, funguses, parasites and other microorganisms), away from animals, property, and people. Food safety is defined as the assurance that food will not cause harm to the consumer when it is prepared or eaten according to its intended use.
