January 10, 2020

Minutes

Staff Advisory Committee

May 1st, 2019

Room 33 Natural Resources Bldg.

11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Attended: Renee Gagnier, Richie Chester, Jan, Becca, Colin, Sarah, Kathryn and Sharon

  1. Kris has retired – served as liaison between us and Deans office, kept us informed on various issues, meetings, awards for staffer and team awards, institutional history.  ** Kris and Katie had historical data on the SAC committee, where are those electronic files?

  1. Welcome Renee Gagnier and Richie Chester – Partnering in this role.  There is no plan to replace Kris in the College.  Renee has been involved on the faculty side of HR and they are looking to see how they can bring consistencies between faculty and staff, Kris’ role was with staff only.  CANR is trying to figure out as they go how duties will be split.  Katie will no longer be available to assist with website updates or administrative help.  This is our last month until September.  Kathryn and Jan have access to the website.  Future communications should go to both Renee and Richie.  Colin has an updated email list he will forward to us.

  1. Approve meeting minutes from April 3rd – APPROVED

  1. CANR Spring Celebration – Jan was the only SAC member who could attend.  She counted about 65 people in attendance.  After program they toured the facility and labs.  Those in attendance were those getting awards, upper administration, and communication dept.  The date was on top of two department events.  People getting years of service recognition were not notified.  No expectation on anyone to be there.  Is there a clear message coming from the Dean’s office to the units to encourage people to go.  Who organized???  Richie said Kris, Suzanne and Event Services.  Many new people who don’t really know what the event is.  Richie: Is the event put on because we have to or do you want an event?

  1. New vacancies – Mackenzie and Tristan no longer feel they can be on the committee.  Typically, we seek out individuals in the Zone to join the committeeSuggested we send an email to both zones’ to see if anyone is interested.  Jan, Kathryn, and Becca’s terms end 2019 all will renew for another term.  Kathryn asked if there is a budget for the committee, Kris had a budget will that continue?  The committee wants to make sure what are format is going forward.

Richie asked what their role is (Renee and Richie); listen, no vote.  There is not really a clear definition from the Dean on what he wants their role to be.  Renee – this may be the perfect time to review what our direction should be.   She and Richie can have some conversations with the Dean to see what he wants the committee’s charge to be.  Kathryn - We need to have a platform to take to the Dean with what we need.  Monthly staffer – line this up months in advance, the way we select and issue awards.  What about doing something quarterly, choose a number from nominations.  Renee: could we put this on hold for now?    Push more to a staff advocacy committee.  Richie: look at bylaws to see what role is and if we want to make a change, now would be a time to pursue an amendment…look at college bylaws.  **Look at current Monthly staffers and put a pause!!

  1. Review term lengths for current members
