Sustainable Bioproducts Program

The Sustainable Bioproducts Program, SBP, is an integrated educational and research platform that fosters innovation in bioproducts and sustainable energy. Faculty expertise includes wood physics and chemistry, engineered wood products, sustainable building and mass timber structures, bio-based products, and bioenergy.  The Department of Forestry at MSU is a leader in training the new generation of students to address the challenging task of developing innovative bio-based products that will stimulate economic and business development for rural and urban communities, while helping mitigate the treats of economic and environmental uncertainty.

Goal

The goal of the SBP in the Department of Forestry at MSU is to foster innovations in education, research, and outreach in forest bioproducts that can translate into economic and business development for rural and urban communities.

The SBP establishes the foundation to help support the forest bioeconomy by providing academic educational programs at the undergraduate and graduate level, and non-academic programs aimed at industry professionals.

Impact

Michigan has more than 4 million acres of forest, which support a vibrant products industry employing more than 35,000 professionals. The lumber and the pulp and paper industry have traditionally been the primary industries contributing to job creation and high GDP in the rural, resource-rich forest communities. The introduction and growth of the composite wood products industry has added substantial value to these primary industries and enabled the use of residual materials from lumber and paper manufacturing for fabrication of composite products used in construction, furniture, interior and exterior coatings, and home and business furnishings.

These products are derived from certified sustainably managed forests. This ensures a continuous supply of renewable products, while maintaining forest health and biodiversity. Increasingly, wood reuse and recycling efforts are diverting waste from landfills. This enables their use for energy and materials that create value-added products and business opportunities.

Michigan forest product industries are related to national and world platforms to markets and trade, partnerships, and research and development.  These industries currently contribute $20 billion to the state economy, making it one of the most important economic sectors in the state of Michigan.
