Graduate programs

MS and PhD Degree, with focus on bioproducts

The Department of Forestry offers advanced degrees focused on current issues and innovative opportunities related to forest products. Graduate students interested in interdisciplinary research can develop and work on joint projects with faculty members in Construction Management, Chemical Engineering and Material Sciences, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and other allied departments.

Master of Science in Forestry (MS)

Students can pursue an MS program from Plan A (research with thesis) or Plan B (course work with final project). The MS program requires 30 credit hours including and at least six research credits for Plan A. MS degrees are usually completed in 1.5 to 2 years.

Doctor of Philosophy in Forestry (PhD)

The PhD program generally takes 4-5 years at the full time load and requires the successful completion of a comprehensive exam, and the defense of a thesis based on original work that contributes to the field.

All graduate students are required to take FOR 802 (Forest Research Science) as part of their course requirement. For more information on the MSU forestry graduate program requirements, check the graduate handbook.

Graduate research assistantships that include tuition waiver and medical insurance reimbursement may be available. Contact SBP faculty members to inquire about available opportunities.
