New resources help promote malting barley production in Michigan
- 2014 Malting Barley Variety Trial - There is increasing interest within Michigan amongst craft brewers in sourcing locally grown malting barley for use in specialty beers. With the rise of the locavore movement, there is a distinct enthusiasm amongst consumers for locally sourced products. There are nearly 150 craft breweries in the state, of which nearly all the beer produced comes from out-of-state malt. One of the major challenges among producers willing to grow barley for malt production is the need for varietal information that is specific to both yield and malt characteristics. Furthermore, the lack of in-state processing options (malthouse) limits production potential. In response, UPREC researchers and specialistswill coduct research to address the following objectives: 1) Conduct a 4-site variety trial, (Upper Peninsula [two sites] and Northern Michigan [two sites]) in order to evaluate varieties for yield performance and malt characteristics; 2) Conduct a feasibility study for a small to mid-scale malting facility in Michigan; and 3) Deliver results through Extension programs and applicable publications. Funding has been granted by Project GREEEN and Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
