Research
Our research interest focuses on the development and fundamental understanding of lignocellulosic materials, fully bio-based polymers, plant-based packaging, and active/intelligent packaging through innovative lignocellulose, polymer, and organic chemistries, chemical/mechanical/biological processing, and molecular designing principles. Our current research projects include but not limited to:
- Separate carbohydrates, cellulosic fibers, and nanomaterials from lignocellulose with less chemical, energy and capital inputs
- Develop and fundamentally understand carbohydrate- or lignin-based antimicrobial agents, antioxidants, and adhesives
- Develop and fundamentally understand fully bio-based barrier polymers and materials with applications in packaging
- Develop active/intelligent packaging materials integrated with biosensors, gas sensors, chemical sensors, pH, and temperature indicators
