Biochar: When Does It Work? When Doesn't It?

October 20, 2023 8:15AM - 1:00PM

Online

Join Sebastian Behrens, Associate Professor in Environmental Engineering at the University of Minnesota on October 20th for CharTalk!

Soil and plant responses to biochar can be negative, positive, or neutral, depending on many variables. In this presentation, we'll discuss feedstock and pyrolysis temperature variables, application rate and method, and application context.

Considering the heterogeneous nature of biochars and the complexity of the physical, biochemical, and microbiological processes underpinning their effects, a wide range of responses to biochar application have been reported. These macroscale responses of soils and plants to biochar amendment are mediated on the microscale at the biochar surface.

In this presentation, Sebastian will highlight research on biochar-soil-compost interactions aimed at understanding the mechanisms of observed soil/plant responses to biochar amendment and point out the need to develop guidelines on selecting and producing biochar formulations to meet specific soil and environmental constraints.
