  • 1st Ever MSU FBIC Community Hog Roast

    MSU FBIC hosted the first hog roast to meet the station's neighbors and forestry research and extension partners. FBIC is evolving to meet the needs of local, state, tribal and federal forestry partners and the private landowners in the Upper Peninsula. This hog roast is slated to be an annual spring event that we hope to grow over the years.

  • Logs to Lumber at MSU

    Follow the process from woods to sawmill to lumber. MSU FBIC is salvaging white ash from a small area that will become a new sugarbush in the future. The trees will die from emerald ash borer in the near future and would fall on the sap mainlines and lateral lines. Watch Mitch, Kile, and Antonio load and mill ash!

  • Soybean Trial Buffer Video

    MSU FBIC has partnered with MSU UPREC to host a soybean variety trial. The 2019 trial will also include a paired outside the fence planting to show deer browse pressure.

  • Collecting and Preserving MSU Entomology Bug Traps 2019

    MSU FBIC employees assist with a diverse array of projects on the station and in the UP. Nick and Mitch collect insect survey traps across the UP to look for invasive pests and collect population information on other native insects. The project's lead Investigator is Deb McCullough based out of East Lansing MI.

  • Dunbar Forest Inventory

    MSU FBIC oversees the 5700 acre Dunbar Forest in Sault Ste. Marie Michigan. Along the St. Mary's River the crew manages the timber for future research and education. This video shows the two man crew inventorying the various stands during summer 2019. Their work will set the stage for the next 5 years of timber harvests on the forest.

  • Dunbar Red Pine Harvest Video

    MSU FBIC crew showcases the 2019 Dunbar harvest that occurred near Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Harvesting is the first step in the process of providing telephone poles, saw timber, and pulp into the regional market. It is also the first step in regenerating the stand. These harvested areas will be evaluated for natural regeneration and replanted if needed.

  • Weed Barrier and Mulch

    Installing weed barrier fabric and applying mulch to the chestnut seedlings. These two things reduce weed competition and soil temperatures around the root zone as well as increases soil moisture. All things that improve growth and survival of young trees.

  • 2019 Maple Confections School

    MSU FBIC hosted a Maple Confections school for Michigan Maple Producers Association members in Bad Axe MI. Steve Childs, Cornell Maple Specialist was the keynote speaker. the daylong event featured several value added maple products.

  • Red Pine Harvest part 2

    Kile Zuidema returns to MSU's Dunbar Forest to check on and oversee the next portion of red pine to be removed from the sale area. These next pine to be harvested are massive and will make power transmission poles at Hydrolake. the mechanized harvesters at work are just awesome at safely handling these large trees.
