Designing in Mass Timber: Current Work and Lessons Learned
As mass timber demand continues to grow in Michigan - and the U.S., generally - architects and engineers are learning how to design beautiful, structurally sound, code-compliant, and cost-effective buildings with these emerging materials. The relationship of architecture and structural engineering is key in all built projects, but perhaps nowhere more so than in works of mass timber. In this conversation, facilitated by architect Brian Craig, we'll hear from architects Anna Anderson and Ben Ridderbos and physical/structural engineer Matt Kanter, who will share current work and lessons learned in designing and executing some prominent mass timber projects. Expect case studies, robust discussion, and of course, time for your questions.

Mass Timber Takeaways for Michigan: Report-Back from the International Mass Timber Conference
In April 2022, a delegation of about 50 Michiganders led by MassTimber@MSU (Michigan State University) attended the International Mass Timber Conference in Portland, Oregon. Representing architecture, engineering, and construction; forest products; NGOs; State agencies; academia; developers and more, these professionals and students have expanded Michigan's mass timber knowledge base by networking, participating in tours, and attending workshops and panels on a broad array of topics. In this webinar, a group of these delegates will share key insights that you can apply to your mass timber projects or initiatives. Bringing Mass Timber to Lumbertown: Adelaide Pointe's Muskegon Lake Vision
Emily and Ryan Leestma have a bold vision for a 30-acre lakefront property they're redeveloping in their West Michigan town, Muskegon. The project, Adelaide Pointe, will feature a marina, boat storage, restaurants, retail, apartments, and 400 condos. The Leestmas are prioritizing a variety of sustainability approaches across the project, including using mass timber for most of the buildings, including the condos.
Join us in conversation with the Leestmas and Adelaide Pointe architect, Jason Korb (the architect behind Milwaukee's Ascent Tower, the tallest mass timber building in the world), to learn how they're approaching mass timber for the project, how they're addressing challenges and barriers, and why they're so excited to bring mass timber to Muskegon - also known as Lumbertown for its long history in the industry.

Assembled in 20 Days: A New Mass Timber Affordable Housing Model
Across the United States communities face unprecedented shortages of affordable housing. According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, Michigan lacks 204,728 units to house low-income residents. Those seeking to close this gap quickly are increasingly raising mass timber as an option, and new models for mass timber affordable housing are starting to emerge.
In this webinar, Patrick Chouinard will talk about how his Ontario, Canada-based company, Element 5 is making multi-unit residential, pre-engineered mass timber structures designed to optimize affordability, rapid construction, durability, and sustainability.

The Kendeda Building: Nail-Laminated Timber and the Living Building Challenge
Georgia Tech's Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design is one of the first 30 buildings in the world certified under the Living Building Challenge. Among its many sustainability features is the building's use of mass timber - specifically glue-laminated timber and locally sourced and manufactured nail-laminated timber (NLT). Learn about the Kendeda project team's innovative approach to NLT and how mass timber factored into the Living Building Challenge certification.

Jimmy Mitchell's project experience includes the Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design, the 28th project to receive (in April 2021) full certification under the Living Building Challenge.
Jimmy joined Skanska in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Georgia Tech. Sustainability is a career passion for him. As one of Georgia’s first LEED managers, Jimmy created the Atlanta Mission urban garden, and is a founding board member of the construction material reuse nonprofit based in Atlanta, the Lifecycle Building Center.

New Challenges In Mass Timber Construction
Christman Constructors, Inc. and Nordic Structures come together to share their experience from several collaborative mass timber projects, including the eight-story Apex Clean Energy Garrett Street project in Charlottesville, Virginia and the state-of-the-art Michigan State University STEM Teaching and Learning Facility. They will share key lessons learned about site logistics, materials sourcing and supply chain, integrating mass timber with other building systems, and protecting timber at the construction site.

Policy Pathways to Mass Timber for Michigan
State policy interventions, along with key Federal actions over the past decade have paved the way for mass timber construction and manufacture in the Pacific Northwest. As mass timber interest grows in Michigan and the surrounding region, this webinar will provide key learnings from Oregon and Washington about the impacts of policy decisions on mass timber value chains in those states. We recommend policy makers, industry stakeholders, and mass timber proponents of all types listen to this conversation.
