August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month in Michigan

On the behalf of the people of Michigan, Governor Rick Snyder proclaims August 2013 as Breastfeeding Awareness Month in Michigan.

This year’s national theme for Breastfeeding Awareness during the month of August is “Breastfeeding Support: Close to Mothers.” This theme highlights the support provided by breastfeeding peer counselors. When community members are trained to offer assistance, they can become a lifeline for families with breastfeeding questions and issues. The key to best breastfeeding practices is continued mother-to-mother support for the breastfeeding mother within her home. Michigan State University Extension’s Breastfeeding Initiative Mother-to-Mother program’s peer counselors continues to offer this support within Michigan mother’s homes.

The certificate of proclamation Gov. Snyder issued states:

WHEREAS, Michigan has made the reduction of infant mortality and the improvement of the overall health status of women and children a priority; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan is committed to ensuring the long-term health of all mothers, infants and children in the state; and,

WHEREAS, breastfeeding is a proven prevention strategy, protecting both infants and mothers from a host of chronic and acute diseases and conditions, and building a foundation for life-long health and wellness; and,

WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan Department of Community Health, the Michigan Breastfeeding Network, and the United States Breastfeeding Committee as well as many members of community breastfeeding coalitions to raise awareness of breastfeeding as the norm for infant and young child feeding and to celebrate the efforts being put forth to make Michigan more “breastfeeding friendly.”

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim August 2013 as Michigan Breastfeeding Awareness Month.
