Beekeeping workshops and webinars from Michigan State University May–September 2024

Beekeepers in Michigan can learn about seasonal beekeeping management and honey bee health by registering for in-person workshops and monthly webinars.

Michigan State University Extension (MSU Extension) offers several opportunities for beekeepers and veterinary practitioners to learn about honey bee colony management and care in the 2024 beekeeping season. People who are considering getting started with beekeeping can enroll in MSU Extension’s free online course, Is Beekeeping Right for Me? MSU Extension compiles additional resources for getting started with beekeeping in Michigan and offers many educational programs.

Beekeeping workshops in Brimley, Lansing and Novi 

Multiple dates 

Join MSU Extension for one or more beekeeping workshops. The hands-on session will cover hive handling, colony inspection, and seasonal beekeeping management. Workshops are open to beginning and experienced beekeepers.

Friday, June 14, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. 

Join MSU Extension for a workshop on how to test honey bee colonies for hygienic behavior and varroa sensitive hygiene. The session will demonstrate methods such as the freeze killed brood assay using liquid nitrogen, the duster spray can assay, UBeeO, and the Harbo assay.

Queen rearing workshops in Chatham and Lansing 

Saturday, June 15, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. in Lansing

Join MSU Extension beekeeping instructors for a queen rearing workshop. The hands-on session will cover grafting, starter colonies, finishing colonies and more.

Honey bee medicine clinics for veterinary practitioners in Brimley, Deckerville, and Lansing 

Multiple dates 

MSU Extension invites veterinary practitioners to attend a honey bee medicine clinic. The hands-on session will cover hive handling, colony inspections and field diagnostics. MSU’s honey bee medicine clinics are only open to veterinarians, veterinary students and veterinary technicians. Due to limited space, participants should not register for more than one clinic in 2024.

Heroes to Hives beekeeping workshops in Lansing, Novi, and Paw Paw 

Multiple dates 

Join MSU Extension for one or more Heroes to Hives beekeeping workshops. The hands-on session will cover hive handling, colony inspection and seasonal beekeeping management. MSU Extension's Heroes to Hives workshops are only open to Veterans, Reservists, Active Duty and National Guard members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their adult children, living and surviving spouses, partners and caregivers.
