Field Crops Webinar on corn nitrogen products and timing March 13, 2017

Understanding the pros and cons of different nitrogen fertilizers and how application timing impacts yield is crucial to successful corn production.

Field crop producers and agribusiness professionals who are unable to attend Michigan State University Extension’s traditional Winter Crop and Pest Update Meetings have no need to worry. On Monday evenings from Feb. 13 through March 27, MSU Extension will offer the 2017 Field Crops Webinar Series addressing key production points for the coming growing season in a condensed virtual format.

These live webinar programs will run from 7-8 p.m. and can be viewed independently online over a high-speed internet connection. Pre-registration is required for all participants at a cost of $15 for the full series of six webinars or $5 per individual webinar session. Registering for the full series will give you access to all previously recorded sessions. One MDARD Pesticide Recertification Credit will be available for each live event (not recordings) for application to the Private Core, Commercial Core or Field Crops (1A) categories.

The webinar session on March 13 will feature MSU Extension soil fertility specialist Kurt Steinke on the topic of “Corn Nitrogen Products and Timing.” Steinke will discuss different rates and timings of nitrogen applications in corn and give recommendations based on research trials. He will answer questions such as, “What do I need to consider when using a starter in-furrow fertilizer?” and “Does a late nitrogen application in corn pay off and, if so, what practice is recommended?” He will also address the topic of phosphorus and potassium fertilization and the importance of understanding just what your soil test is telling you.

The 2017 MSU Extension Field Crops Webinar Series represents a unique opportunity to access the expertise of MSU’s field crop specialists from the comfort of your own home or office. Future webinars include “Soil Fertility for Forage Production” by MSU Extension forage specialist Kim Cassida on March 20, and “Cover Crops for Potato and Soybean Systems” by MSU Extension weed/herbicide diagnostician and cover crop specialist Erin Hill on March 27.
