State and local leaders joined with building construction industry professionals, forest products industry representatives, and academics in the U.P. in early October to celebrate an important Michigan mass timber milestone: the groundbreaking of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Newberry Customer Service Center.

In remarks, MassTimber@MSU Director Sandra Lupien marked two key “firsts” about this building. One, the building is a fully mass timber structure—the first in Michigan; and two, it’ll be the first to use Michigan-sourced wood—red pine—in cross laminated timber panels. Designed by Lord Aeck Sargent with construction management by Walbridge and installation by Clark Contracting Services , the building is set to be completed in October 2024.
