Michigan strawberries

Michigan strawberries can be found in every county in Michigan.

We see strawberries year-round in our grocery stores, but our very own Michigan grown varieties are only available during late June and July. Strawberries can be found in every county in Michigan according to the Michigan Department of Agriculture, but the majority is produced in West Michigan’s Berrien, Van Buren and Leelanau counties.

Strawberries are the most popular berry in the world. They are a wonderful source of vitamin C, manganese, dietary fiber, iodine, potassium, folate, riboflavin, vitamin B5, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B6, vitamin K, magnesium and copper. One cup of strawberries contains only 55 calories.

Once strawberries are picked they stop ripening, so choose deep red berries without green or yellow patches which may have a sour flavor. Small or medium sized berries often have more flavor compared to the larger sizes. After picking berries they should be used within a few days. It is recommended not to remove caps or wash until ready to eat. Removing caps before washing will increase water absorption and reduce flavor.

Purchase berries that are not bruised, damaged or moldy. Discard any smashed or overripe berries, which may contaminate others. Berries can be stored in ventilated container for up to three days.

Strawberry banana shake

Serves 2


1 cup skim milk or orange juice

1 cup sliced strawberries

1 small banana, ripe

3 tablespoons wheat germ (optional)

4 ice cubes

  1.  Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
  2. Serve cold
