MSU Extension Tools for Effective Facilitation 2026 programs

Michigan State University Extension is offering two opportunities in 2026 to build or deepen your facilitation skills through the Tools for Effective Facilitation program, known formerly as Facilitative Leadership.

In addition, an advanced four‑day workshop, Tools for Effective Facilitation: Working with Groups in Conflict (formerly Advanced Facilitative Leadership), will be offered for experienced practitioners seeking to strengthen their ability to lead in challenging group environments.

Tools for Effective Facilitation

A three-day, hands-on facilitation training

This interactive workshop focuses on practical tools that help leaders, managers, facilitators, and community professionals:

  • Lead meetings that stay focused and productive.
  • Build consensus and shared ownership.
  • Encourage participation and creative thinking.
  • Turn group dialogue into clear next steps.

Participants facilitate twice during the program and receive structured feedback to increase their confidence and effectiveness.

Tools for Effective Facilitation: Working with Groups in Conflict

A four-day advanced workshop for experienced facilitators

This intensive, advanced session helps participants strengthen their ability to navigate “high‑heat” group dynamics. Skills highlighted during the session include:

  • Managing conflict and competing interests.
  • Maintaining trust in tense or uncertain environments.
  • Leading difficult conversations productively.
  • Intervening strategically when groups stall or escalate.
