Nature smart - Part 1

As we become more connected with technology, we need to reconnect with nature. In the book The Nature Principle, Richard Louv described it best when he stated, “The future will belong to the nature-smart – Those individuals, families, businesses and political leaders who develop a deeper understanding of the transformative power of the natural world and who balance the virtual with the real. The more high-tech we become, the more nature we need.”

Are we a society at risk? There is a whole body of research whose findings support the fact that we need more vitamin N (nature). Study after study has shown the link between nature (or the lack of it) to our health in all areas of life: Physical, emotional and spiritual. Michigan State University Extension says that there is also strong evidence of having experiences in nature that are directly linked to a child’s ability to learn, as well as behavioral issues. Even the severity of symptoms associated with children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). Adults also suffer from ADHD and can also benefit from more nature in their daily activities.

There are many activities families can do together that involve nature. Simple activities such as going for a walk or finding a quiet place to let your mind wander and wonder are great family activities. Research shows with an increase in our exposure to nature, benefits include an increase in attention, improved test scores, improved work productivity and moral.
